Basic Oral Care After Surgery
Oral hygiene is very important when your jaws are wired or banded. Keeping your mouth and teeth clean will help you heal better and reduce the chance of developing infections or cavities. Check with your surgeon to find out which method is preferred.
The following suggestions might help:
Fill a Zip-N-Squeeze bag with the recommended mouth rinse. (2 teaspoon of salt per 1 glass of warm water makes an effective healing
rinse) Lean over the sink and direct the flow along the gum line. A
pre-brushing dental rinse will help loosen plaque.
A moistened Q-tip or cotton swab may be used to wipe over the gums and tooth
surfaces when brushing is impossible. Once brushing is allowed, begin by
using a soft bristled toothbrush ( child size works well) Use a circular
motion and angle the brush at 45 degrees toward the gum line. It is
important to massage the gums as well as clean the teeth. Remember to brush your teeth at least 3 times a day and especially on those back teeth where the food intake is concentrated. Oral rinsing should be done after every meal.
Move your tongue along the inside of your teeth to massage the gums and help keep your teeth clean.
Follow brushing with a mild mouthwash to leave your breath and tongue feeling refreshed.
Use an oral water jet ONLY if ordered by your Doctor.
