Jaw Immobilization
Due to a jaw fracture or reconstructive surgery, your jaw must be immobilized to heal properly. In order to do this, you teeth will be wired or have elastic bands placed on them to hold your jaw in place. During this time it is important that you get an adequate supply of calories and protein to help the healing process. Increased protein intake after surgery is vital for maintaining the body's protective systems and for building healthy new tissue.

Liquid Diet

Eating correctly will help your jaw heal faster and decrease the chance of infection or other problems. Following the four basic food groups is the best guide to good eating. If you don't own a blender, now is the time to get one. Many recipes can be prepared for the entire family and an individual portion removed for the modified special dinner. Remember: Plan Your Meals Ahead!
You will save time and reduce your anxiety level after surgery if you already have a list of meals ready to go. While you are on A liquid diet it may seem as though you are are frequently hungry. This is because your stomach breaks down liquid nutrients faster than a solid meal. It is important that your body has "fuel" (food) to work with at all times to assist the healing that is taking place. It will be necessary to increase the frequency of your meals to five or six times a day instead of the usual three. Don't forget your protein Drinks!
