As a registered nurse, in an acute care facility, I have participated in the recovery and care of many types of patients, most often in a surgical setting. Over the years I have observed many challenges, including the difficulty that certain types of patients encounter when eating. Due to maxillofacial trauma, Jaw surgery, Craniofacial Surgery & Reconstruction or Facial muscle weakness, many times cups and straws cannot be used.
The most common method to offer liquid nutrition to these patients is with a syringe and catheter. The patient uses the syringe to "suck-up" the liquid and then squirt the contents to the back of the mouth. This method is difficult and awkward requiring two hands to control the pressure applied. Often the catheter becomes dislodged spilling the liquid.
After sharing the frustration my patients were experiencing I decided to develop a product that could easily be managed by user or caregiver, effortlessly allowing important hydration and liquid nutrition to be consumed. The result: Zip-n-Squeeze Bags! Immediately patients were able to consume a modified diet with no difficulty at all. The product is designed to be squeezed - No sucking required! As a result of seeing the success my patients have had with the Zip-n-Squeeze Bags, I decided to move forward and work towards solving other issues that patients in recovery face both before & after surgery or during illness.
My goal is to help people gain a sense of control & well being by continuing to develop and make available products that help alleviate pain, difficulty and stress. I am dedicated to providing information, resources and quality products to the people who need to use them.
From a nurse who cares,
